New District Cascina Merlata

A new district collects the legacy of an agricultural space in the Milanese suburbs. The project concerns an area of 530,000 square meters purchased by the real estate company “Euromilano”, the subject of an invitation to tender for the construction of a multifunctional district. The grid of the project is based on the traces of the canals and funds and takes the Cascina Merlata as the starting point of a pedestrian “boulevard” that crosses the neighborhood. It was decided to concentrate the building on the west and south-west side to maintain a large park area and reduce the internal distances of the neighborhood, characterized by an alternation of high and low buildings with green raised ground floors, below which there are parking lots. Schools and civic services are on via Gallarate and near the farmhouse, which has been recovered as an intergenerational civic center. To the north, the shopping center, the hotel complex and the covered square of the Business Forum. The natural green is enriched by technical “green” interventions: the garden roofs; the “lakes” for collecting rainwater; the mini wind turbine and a porch covered by photovoltaic panels that generates the energy to illuminate the park.
