Benedetto Camerana (Turin, 1963), architect (Politecnico di Torino, 1990; OAT; SIAT), landscape architect (AIAPP/EFLA), PhD in History of Architecture and Urban Planning (Politecnico di Torino, 1993), after his studies, continued his theoretical research, focusing on the integration between architecture and landscape, towards a “green architecture” with a clear environmental approach, including the experimental use of innovative technologies and natural energy-saving systems.
He has publicly discussed these themes in publications such as “Il Giornale dell’Architettura,” “La Stampa,” “l’Arca,” “Ottagono,” “Il Giornale dell’Arte,” and more systematically as the Director of the magazines “Eden. L’architettura nel paesaggio” from 1993 to 1997 and “Architettura del Paesaggio” from 2001 to 2005. He has also participated in various workshops, conferences, and was invited as a speaker at the XXIII UIA World Congress of Architecture in 2008.
From 1991 to 1996, he served as an architectural consultant for Fiatengineering, collaborating on the development of many projects related to industrial architecture and workspace. From 1996 to 2005, he was a member of the Board of Directors of Palazzo Grassi in Venice. Between 1998 and 2000, he studied corporate image through architecture for Fiat SpA. Since 1999, he has been a member of the Scientific Committee of the IED – European Institute of Design, with locations in Turin and Milan, where he has been the coordinator of the Master in Exhibit Design since 2000. From 2010 to 2011, he worked as an adjunct professor in architectural design at the Politecnico di Torino.
Starting from January 2012, he became the President of the National Automobile Museum, and since March 2013, he has been the President of the Lingotto consortium in Turin. From March 2015, he became a member of the Metaphysical Club of Domus Academy in Milan. Since 2022, he has held the position of President of the non-profit association De Sono, and he is also responsible for the ESG Thinking Lab for Planet Smart City.
In 1997, he founded Camerana&Partners in Turin, a professional organization that involved Italian and international architects collaborating on various urban transformation projects until 2012. Today, Benedetto Camerana Studio’s work has been flourishing for over twenty years, participating in urban design, landscape, and major public and private architectural projects, particularly in cultural-museum, automotive, residential, office, retail, entertainment, and sports infrastructure sectors. Their design research aims for technical and formal innovation, emphasizing a concrete environmental commitment, experimental use of innovative technologies, natural energy-saving systems, and the integration of these elements with the natural environment within the projects.
Project
Among the main works are the Tecnocity Environment Park in Turin (1997-1999), Bicocca Village in Milan (1998-2004), the Auchan shopping center in Cuneo (2001-2004), the Olympic Village for the XX Winter Olympic Games Turin 2006, awarded the Gold Medal of Italian Architecture, the renovation of the Auditorium RAI by Carlo Mollino (Turin, 2000-2006), the new Amiat headquarters in Turin (2005-2007), the critical restoration of the Du Parc residence in Turin (2006-2007), the redevelopment of the historic center of Trino Vercellese (2004-2008), the Urban Center in Rivarolo Canavese (2005-2008), the Business Incubator Parco Torricelli in Faenza (2005-2009), the Città della Salute in Novara (preliminary project, 2009-2011), the Piazza dei Mestieri 2 school in Turin (2011), the restoration of the Doria De Fornari palace (Genoa, 2006-2012), the urban plan for the Novello area in Cesena (2008-2012), the Einaudi Campus in Turin (2006-2012), the Church Maria Madre dei Giovani in the Arsenale della Pace (Turin, 2007-2012), the Juventus Museum inside the Juventus Stadium in Turin (2010-2012), the complete redesign of the Alfa Romeo Museum in Arese with new exhibition spaces (2014-2015), Camera – Italian Center for Photography in Turin (2014-2015), the redesign of the Petersen Museum in Los Angeles (architectural and artistic consultancy with The Scenic Route, December 2015), the new headquarters of the Automobile Club in Turin (2014-2016), the new single hospital for Verbano-Cusio-Ossola (approved preliminary project, 2018), the redesign of the Ferrari Museum in Maranello (2018), and the Student Residence in Piazza Guala in Turin for Unipol Sai (2019). Additionally, the realization of 20 exclusive apartments for Reale Mutua in the historic Torre Littoria building (Turin, 2018-2020), La Pista500, the rooftop garden on the Lingotto (Turin, 2020-2021), the Masterplan for the Nitto ATP Finals (Turin, 2021-2025), the redevelopment of the Maria Vittoria palace (Turin, 2018-2022), and the Larusmiani boutique in the Montenapoleone district (Milan, 2023).
In addition to these, there are several international competitions, such as the Masterplan Service Center and Museum in Shenzhen (awarded project, 2018) and the one for the design of Lai’An City (awarded project, Nanjing 2018). Finally, Camerana has designed many exhibits for Alfa Romeo, Maserati, Ferrari, and the Archaeological Museum of Turin.
Among the ongoing projects are the Waterfront in Messina (competition for the Masterplan of the Stazione Marittima S. Cecilia area won in 2012 with FM Ingegneria and Ufo, Detailed Plan under adoption), the commercial complex with university residence in the TNE area in Mirafiori (Turin, 2009-2021, preliminary project), a private residence in Barbania (Turin 2018-2021), the redevelopment of the De Agostini area (Novara, 2017-2023, feasibility project and urban variant), the Go-Fit Lido sports centers (Milan, 2019-2021, preliminary and final project for concession) and Mercato dei Fiori (Turin, 2019-2023, construction underway), the Space Center/Space Museum (Turin, 2018-2023, feasibility study), the Exhibition Center and Showroom in Via Tortona (Milan, 2019-2023, construction underway), Roarington Meta Masterplan for TCCT-The Classic Car Trust (Metaverse, 2023), and the awarding of the competition for the redevelopment of the school institute of Borgo San Giuseppe (Cuneo, 2023, delivery of the preliminary project).
